Title: Sketching Tips for Travelers: A Demonstration with Peg Sheridan and Betty Gatewood Date: Monday, December 3, 1-3 pm
Description: In celebration of our recently scheduled Travel Study trip to the Coast of Maine (http:bssschool.org/fall-2019-coastal-maine/), Betty and I will be demonstrating and sharing helpful tips to document your unique travel experiences. Next time you're on vacation and are struck by a sight you'd like to record, don't snap a photo, reach for your sketchbook or travel journal instead. This fun and casual demonstration will help you get started. I will start with a watercolor painting demonstration of a way to paint rocks, waves, and seascapes; prominent sights on the coast of Maine. Betty, with a background in biology and ecology, will then demonstrate how to capture nature's smaller details with pencil and pen sketches. She will also show you how to create a personalized travel journal, specific to your needs. Both of us will discuss potential materials, supplies and resources. Most of all, you'll see how travel sketching can become a treasured component of your travels! Suitable for those of all interests and artistic levels. Lighthouses in Watercolor Date:Saturday, January 5, 2019 Time: 10 am to 3 pm Description: Enjoy a relaxing day learning about watercolor painting. No experience is necessary, and you don't have to bring anything; the instructor will provide quality paints, watercolor paper, brushes, a full color lesson, a mat, coffee, and everything you need to complete two watercolor paintings! We will start by going over the basic techniques of watercolor painting, and then complete a scene with a lighthouse. Please bring photos of your favorite lighthouses and other ocean scenes. We will use pen and ink drawings and watercolor washes. Peg will do a step-by-step demonstration, then provide individual help as you work on your painting. Register by December 28. Title: Watercolor Set Free: Capturing the Essence of a Subject Date: Monday mornings, January 14-February 18, 2018 Time: 9:00 am - 12 pm (note the time change from previous classes (from 2.5 to 3 hours per session). This is in response to students' requests). Description: Do you tend to start loose in your paintings, only to tighten up and lose the freshness? This class will help you to overcome that habit by simplifying designs, using big brushes, and capturing the essence and energy of the subject. You will soon see that fluid, spontaneous nature of working this way is more fun than you've ever had with watercolor! Painting subjects will vary each week, and you will bring your own ideas and references. The final stages of adding detail line, darks, and pops of color will be valuable tools to have in completing all of your paintings. Peg will offer critiques, color worksheets, and one-on-one help. Capturing the Subtle Beauty of Winter in Watercolor Date: Wednesday, January 16, 2019 Time: 10 am - 3 pm Description: Winter is a great time to paint, and you can find inspiration all around you! Learn how to make beautiful wet-in-wet washes that depict drifting snow. Also, discover how to paint snow falling, and snowy trees. You will learn several methods for saving and adding whites to a painting. Along with this, you will sharpen your skills in planning a painting. Peg will offer critiques, color worksheets, and one-on-one help. Most students will leave with two small finished paintings. A materials list can be found on the registration form (see below). Painting Like the Masters in Watercolor Dates:Tuesday evenings, 6-8 pm February 5-March 12, 2019
Description: Join us as we study the work of artists such as Winslow Homer, Pierre Joseph Redout, Charles Demuth, Zoltan Szabo, Georgia O'Keeffe, and James McNeill Whistler. We will look at each artist's techniques, and try them on our own paintings. You choose works that inspire you, and either copy them or use what you learned from them to enrich your own paintings. Each student will also choose a contemporary watercolor master to either copy or inform his or her paintings. You will receive a materials list. Students at Larkin Arts receive a discount on M.
