Title:Painting Like the Masters in Watercolor Dates:Tuesday evenings, 6-8 pm February 5-March 12, 2019
Description: Join us as we study the work of artists such as Winslow Homer, Pierre Joseph Redout, Charles Demuth, Zoltan Szabo, Georgia O'Keeffe, and James McNeill Whistler. We will look at each artist's techniques, and try them on our own paintings. You choose works that inspire you, and either copy them or use what you learned from them to enrich your own paintings. Each student will also choose a contemporary watercolor master to either copy or inform his or her paintings. You will receive a materials list. Students at Larkin Arts receive a discount on M. Title: The Fastest Way to Improve Your Paintings: Sketching with Watercolor and Other Media Date: Monday mornings, March 11-April 15 Time: 9:00 am - 12 pm Description:Let Peg help you improve your skills of observation, painting, and drawing by demonstrating how to sketch in a wide variety of media…and then confidently start a painting with only a brush! You’ll use watercolor, pencil, ink, and many other tools to quickly develop sketches that accurately capture the gesture and shape of your subject… without laboring over the preparatory studies. Then you can employ your best sketches to create exciting paintings that have freshness and vitality. Peg will demonstrate how to train your eyes to see more, to record what you see with a few lines and shapes, and to use various tools and techniques. Come learn new techniques, rekindle your joy in painting, develop reference material for future paintings, and establish a habit of sketching when you travel. Some classes will be held outside. Title: Skies in Watercolor Date:Saturday, March 2, 2019 Time: 10 am to 3 pm Description: Skies are one of the most important elements in a watercolor landscape. Yet, many people paint the same boring blue sky in every painting! Learn how to capture any kind of weather and paint gorgeous skies! You will be amazed at how this one class improves all of your landscape paintings! Bring several photos of skies, clouds, sunsets, rain, fog, etc.
No experience is necessary, and you don't have to bring anything; the instructor will provide quality paints, watercolor paper, brushes, a full color lesson, a mat, coffee, and everything you need to complete two watercolor paintings! We will start by going over the basic techniques of watercolor painting, and then Peg will several demonstrations. She will also offer one-on-one help. Wear old clothes, or bring an apron. Also bring photos of interesting skies, if you have them. Peg will have some, also. Title: Night Scenes in Watercolor Date:Wednesday, March 13, 2019 Time: 10 am to 3 pm, with a 45 minute lunch break Description: You can paint mysterious, moody, wonderful paintings of the evening or night in watercolor. Learn how to plan a night painting, and how to mix rich, dark colors. We will practice techniques of painting sunsets, stars, moonlight, lights, and shadows at night. Peg will show you how, through demonstrations, step-by-step color worksheets, and individual help. Bring your favorite photos of night scenes. A materials list will be provided. Have you noticed that you often discover, too late, that your drawing is "off" in your painting? Would you like to keep a drawing/painting sketchbook, but don't know where to start? We will cover all of this, and much more, in this class. Peg will cover drawing and painting materials, techniques, and tricks, to help you start and finish your paintings successfully. This class will include: demonstrations, color worksheets, and individual help. You may work on the subject matter of your choice. A supply list will be available. Title: Painting Big and Bold: Georgia O’Keeffe-Inspired Watercolors Date: Saturday, April 6, 2019 Time: 10-3 Georgia O’Keeffe painted many watercolors, especially during her years in New Mexico. She also painted some in Charlottesville! Learn about her techniques and inspiration, then try some of your own. You can either copy an O’Keeffe painting or use your own ideas and photos to paint in a similar way. It is fun to paint flowers, plants, figures, or interesting landscapes, with bold juicy color. Peg will show you techniques, then do a demonstration. Then you will paint, with her guidance. You will be amazed at what you can learn in one day! This class is open to beginners to advanced painters. You don’t have to bring anything; just dress in old clothes or wear an apron. The instructor provides all of the materials, including quality paper and paints, brushes, etc. You will receive a color handout, and a mat to mount your painting in. Peg will have examples of O'Keeffe's work, but feel free to bring a couple that inspire you most. Most students will complete two small paintings in this class. Coffee and tea provided. Title: Painting Water and Rocks in Watercolor (Sponsored by VECCA) Date: Saturday, April 13, 2019 Time: 10-3:30, with lunch break Watercolor is the perfect medium for painting water, and you can learn how to do it in this one day workshop. We will work on painting reflections on a late, sparkles on water, flowing rivers, cascades, and convincing rocks. The class will include demonstrations, color worksheets, and individual help. Please bring your favorite photos of rocks and water. This class is open to beginners to advanced painters. Most students will complete two small paintings in this class. We will spend time learning how to paint: rocks, tress, ridges, for and waterfalls. Each day will focus on a different subject and technique. In the process, you will acquire many painting skills, including mixing color, painting wet-in-wet, creating texture, saving whites, and much more. You will learn now to compose a painting, how to plan values, how to choose a limited palette, and how to develop a painting.
