Materials List (call me if you have questions):
A covered palette. If you need to buy one, I recommend the Mijello palette (around $19), which won't leak.
Watercolor Paints: Student or professional grade watercolors in yellow, red, blue, brown, and green. I suggest the following: cobalt or ultramarine blue; prussian/thalo/Antwerp blue; any green (or mix green with blue and yellow); Burnt Sienna,Quinacridone Rust, or Quinacridone Burnt Orange; Quinacridone Rose, Rose Madder, Permanent Rose, Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Magenta; Gamboge, Azo or Nickle Azo yellow; Paynes Gray or Indigo, and other colors that you enjoy using. Please don't worry if you don't have all of these colors. Substitutions are fine. Titanium white gouache is also handy.
Brushes: I leave my expensive brushes at home, and bring just a few rounds, flata, a rigger, and a small round for details. A scrubber is also very handy (it removes mistakes). My favorite is Cheap Joe's Fritch Scrubber. Bring any other brushes you like to use.
A pencil (I use a 2H), eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
Paper towels or rags
A large water container with a lid (filled with water): Like a peanut butter or mayo jar.
Professional grade (Arches 140 lb cold press) watercolor paper. You will need 2-3 full sheets for the whole 6 weeks (or use a tablet or block). You can rip or cut paper to a size that fits a standard mat. You can also take watercolor paper and two pieces of mat board to Staples or FedEx, and ask them to make it into a spiral journal, for about $5. If you use loose sheets, bring a board and tape or clips. Also bring scraps or the blank side of old paintings, to practice on. Please don't bring Strathmore or Cotman paper; it will not work for the techniques we will be learning.
A board to place your paper on, unless you’re using a pad, tablet or block. It can be foam core, wood, etc. It should be slightly larger than your paper.
A viewfinder (make your own, or buy one by Guerilla Painter)
A roll of masking, artist, or blue painters tape
Easel: Most people will paint with a board and paper on their lap. If you like to stand and paint, you can use an easel. For watercolor, you need an easel that can go flat or slightly slanted.
A chair and a small collapsible table: See Camco aluminum folding table from Walmart.com or Amazon, about $25.
Optional: Masking fluid, white acrylic or gouache paint, a black or sepia Pigma Micron pen, size 03 or 05, a scraper, and Xacto knife.
Miscellaneous: sunscreen, bug spray, a jacket, hat, and water. I also use Permethrin spray on my clothes, hat and boots. It keeps ticks away.
