Do you enjoy painting and sketching nature? Do you struggle with overworking a painting? Do you tend to give up on paintings because you are stuck? This class may be very helpful for you.
We will spend time on planning a painting, deciding on a color palette, and developing our own unique style of painting. We will study the landscape, including atmospheric perspective, color, and light vs. shadow. We will practice painting believable trees, plants, and rocks; painting fur and feathers on wild creatures; and painting other natural things that interest you. You will be encouraged to follow your own style and interests; Peg will help you to achieve the next level in your painting skills. If you are a plein air painter or sketcher, this class will be a great warm-up for outdoor painting. If you are a studio painter, this class will help you to paint what you love. If you are a botanical or detail painter, you will learn tools to paint the textures and colors you see.
Peg Sheridan has been painting in watercolor for about 40 years, and teaching for about 30 years. She is known for her encouraging, positive teaching style. She has received several regional, and two national awards for her watercolors. She paints outdoors regularly. She won Best Watercolor in the August Salon 2020 competition in Plein Air Magazine, and has three paintings in issue #50 of Watercolour magazine. See her website for more information.
Materials List (call me if you have questions):
A medium to large sized palette: make sure you have a space for mixing color on the palette.
Watercolor Paints: Student or professional grade watercolors in yellow, red, blue, brown, green and gray. I suggest the following: cobalt or ultramarine blue; prussian/thalo/Antwerp blue; any green; Burnt Sienna,Quinacridone Rust, or Quinacridone Burnt Orange; Alizarin Crimson, Rose Madder, or Quinacridone Magenta; Gamboge, Azo or Nickle Azo yellow; Quinacridone Gold; Hookers, Sap or Apatite Green; Indigo or Paynes Gray; and other colors that you enjoy using. Please don't worry if you don't have all of these colors. Substitutions are fine. If you have white gouache or acrylic, bring that also (or use Peg's).
Brushes: a large and small (size 4 or 6), and a large round brush (size 10 or 12), a 1 inch flat, a 1.5 or 2 inch wash, and a rigger/liner/script brush is recommended. A scrubber is also very handy (it removes mistakes). My favorite is Cheap Joe's Fritch Scrubber. Bring any other brushes you like to use.
A pencil, eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
Paper towels or rags
A large water container: Like a large yogurt tub or mayo jar.
Professional Grade (Arches 140 lb cold press) watercolor paper . You will need at least 10 pieces in whatever size you like to paint on. I recommend working no larger than 9X12 in class. You can use sheets, a tablet, or a block. Also bring scraps or the blank side of old paintings, to practice on. Please don't bring Strathmore or Cotman paper; it will not work for the techniques we will be learning.
A board to place your paper on. It can be foam core, wood, etc. It should be slightly larger than your paper.
A roll of masking, artist, or blue painters tape
A piece of Grafix acetate, a little bigger than the size of paper you like (or buy a piece from me; an11X14 is $5. Bring cash on the first day of class. ) It is sold by Cheap Joes Art Stuff.
Reference Materials: sketches and/or photos of landscapes, portraits, still lifes, or anything else that inspires you. Remember, look for simple shapes, and light to dark values.
Optional: Masking fluid, an Xacto knife, white acrylic or gouache paint, a black or sepia Pigma Micron pen, size 03 or 05.
