Do you want to learn to paint looser, and more decisively? Do you tend to overwork your paintings? Would you like to learn how to distill a scene down to a few simple shapes? Join us to learn all of these things, and more. We will start with some ideas on simple compositions. We will practice expressive brush strokes with large brushes. Then, we will create several small, beautiful paintings. You choose whether you do landscapes, abstracts, portraits, or any subject matter. By the end of this workshop, you will have gained skills and confidence. You will also have fun! Peg will offer demonstrations, critiques and individual help. A materials list will be provided. Learn how to paint a forest in this fun and informative workshop! We will use brushes, mat board, sponges and salt to make woodland scenes from any season of the year. You will learn new techniques, tips on composition, and how to choose colors that will work well in a painting. Bring photos of forest scenes (Peg will have some, too). Peg will provide color worksheets, demonstrations, one-on-one help, and critiques. Peg Sheridan has been painting in watercolor for about 40 years, and teaching for about 30 years. She is known for her encouraging, positive teaching style. She has received several regional, and two national awards for her watercolors. She paints outdoors regularly. She is on the faculty of Beverley Street Studio School, and teaches workshops for many art organizations in Virginia. She won Best Watercolor in the August Salon 2020 competition in Plein Air Magazine. See her website for more information.

Please don't worry if you don't have all of these colors. Substitutions are fine. If you have white gouache or acrylic, bring that also (or use Peg's).
Brushes: a large and small round brush, a 1 inch flat brush, and a rigger/script/liner brush. A scrubber is also very handy (it removes mistakes).
A pencil, eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
Paper towels or rags
A large water container: Like a large yogurt tub or mayo jar.
Professional Grade (Arches 140 lb cold or hot press recommended) watercolor paper, or other surface. : Bring about 8 small (4X6, 5X7, 5X5, 6X8, etc., any shape) sheets of watercolor paper, or a tablet or block. and some scrap pieces. Please don't bring Strathmore or Cotman paper; it will not work for this lesson.
A board to place your paper on. It can be foam core, wood, etc. It should be slightly larger than your paper.
A roll of masking, artist, or blue painters tape
A ruler, or mats that fit your paper sizes
Reference Materials: sketches and/or photos of landscapes or anything else that inspires you. Remember, look for simple shapes, and light to dark values.
