Level: Beginner to advanced.  
Cost: $150. Please note: cancellations after August 7 will lose a $50 deposit.

You can paint mysterious, moody, wonderful paintings of the evening or night in watercolor.  Learn how to plan a night painting, and how to mix rich dark colors.  We will practice techniques for painting sunsets, stars, moonlight, lights, and shadows at night.  Peg will show you how, through demonstrations, step-by-step color worksheets, and individual help.
                   
Materials List (call me if you have questions):
  • A medium to large sized palette (or a butcher tray or white plate, etc).
  • Paints: I suggest you bring the following: Ultramarine blue; Prussian or Thalo or Antwerp blue, any green, any brown; alizarin crimson or  quinacridone magenta or similar red; any yellow; and either Paynes gray, indigo, neutral tint or black.  Other colors you can bring if you have them: Mineral Violet, Thalo or Winsor Green (they all make good darks).  If you have white gouache or acrylic, bring that also (or use mine).  Also bring any other colors you love. 
  • A large (quart or so) water container. A large yogurt or mayonnaise container works well. 
  • Brushes: a small and a large round brush, a 1"  flat brush, a rigger and a scrubber.  Also bring a 1.5 to 2 inch wash brush or large mop brush, if you have them.
  • A pencil, eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
  • Paper towels
  • A small amount of table salt (or use mine)
  • Professional watercolor paper.  I recommend Arches 140 lb. cold press paper, and only that brand. Do not bring Strathmore or Cotman paper.  Bring 2 to 4 pieces, whatever size you prefer to work on.  I recommend doing several smaller paintings (around 8X10), as you will learn more than attempting to do one or two larger ones.   Please bring scrap paper, too (the backs of old paintings or cheaper paper).
  • A board to place your paper on.  It could be a piece of foam core, wood, etc.  It should be slightly larger than your paper.  Also bring a small piece of wood or something to prop up the top of your board about an inch.  Or you could bring a table easel.
  • Optional: Masking fluid (if you don't have it, you can use mine), also black India Ink (waterproof is best, non-waterproof is ok too)
  • Photos of evening or night scenes that inspire you
  • You can buy a kit from me, if you don't have supplies.  It includes enough paint, brushes, paper, a pencil, and a palette to take you through the class, with lots of paint left over.  The kits are $80. Contact me by August 1 if you'd like a kit.
