You can learn a lot by studying the works of the masters. In this class, we will focus on the Impressionist painters in watercolor. We will study how they looked at their subjects, how they captured the light, and how they used brushstrokes to give the impression of a subject. We will look at the materials and techniques they used to achieve each of their unique styles. Then, we will use what we learned to apply it to our own paintings, giving them a new freshenss.
We will investigate the works of ground-breaking impressionists including John Singer Sargent, Henri Matisse, and J.M.W. Turner. We will also look at the more modern impressionistic pieces of Edward Seago and Edward Wesson. You will also researh and paint like an impressionistic painter of your choice.
Peg Sheridan has been painting in watercolor for about 40 years, and teaching for about 30 years. She is known for her encouraging, positive teaching style. She has received several regional, and two national awards for her watercolors. She paints outdoors regularly. She won Best Watercolor in the August Salon 2020 competition in Plein Air Magazine, and has three paintings in issue #50 of Watercolour magazine. See her website for more information.
Materials List (call me if you have questions):
Palette: A covered palette with at least one large mixing area is preferred.
Watercolor Paints: Student or professional grade watercolors, not Artists Loft brand (sold at Michaels). M. graham, Daniel Smith, Winsor Newton, Holbein, or DaVinci are all good brands. Suggested colors include: Quincridone gold or gamboge yellow; azo, bismuth, Hansa, or aureolin yellow; Quinacridone red, Pyrrol red, Napthol red or Cadmium red; Quinacridone Rose or Magenta, Alizarin Crimson, or Rose Madder ; Ultramarine or cobalt blue; Prussian, Thalo, Antwerp or Cerulean blue. Optional colors are any gray (Indigo, Paynes Gray, or Neutral tint) and any green. Titanium white gouache is also optional. Add any of your favorite colors. Part of the goal of this class is to get you to know more about the many colors you can mix from what you already have.
Brushes: Watercolor brushes, including a 1.5" or 2" wash brush, a 1" flat, #8 or #10 round, any size rigger, and any other brushes you may want to bring. A scrubber is also very handy (it removes mistakes). My favorite is Cheap Joe's Fritch Scrubber. Bring any other brushes you like to use.
A pencil (I use a 2H), eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
Paper towels or rags
A water container, about the size of a large mayo or yogurt container.
Professional grade (Arches 140 lb cold press) watercolor paper. The brand "Arches" is required. You will need at least 2 full sheets for the whole 6 weeks (or use a tablet or block). You can rip or cut paper to a size that fits a standard mat. Also bring scraps or the blank side of old paintings, to practice on.
A board to place your paper on, unless you’re using a pad, tablet or block. It can be foam core, wood, etc. It should be slightly larger than your paper. Also bring a roll of tape or small block of wood to prop up the top of your board about 1.5 inche
A roll of masking, artist, or blue painters tape
