There's a lot more to watercolor painting than drawing a subject and filling it in with color. We will practice important skills, such as: balancing soft and hard edges, layering and glazing, wet in wet painting, and adding textures. We will also work on improving brush skills. Composing an interesting painting will be a part of each lesson. Weekly homework assignments will help you to make rapid progress. You choose the subject matter you would like to paint. Each class will include critiques, demonstrations, one on one help, and color worksheets. A materials list is below. Peg Sheridan has been painting in watercolor for about 40 years, and teaching for about 30 years. She is known for her encouraging, positive teaching style. She has received several regional, and two national awards for her watercolors. She paints outdoors regularly. She won Best Watercolor in the August Salon 2020 competition in Plein Air Magazine. See her website for more information.
Materials List (call me if you have questions):
A medium to large sized palette: make sure you have a space for mixing color on the palette.
Watercolor Paints: I suggest the following: cobalt or ultramarine blue; prussian/thalo/Antwerp blue; any green; Burnt Sienna/Quinacridone Rust/Burnt Orange; any red; any yellow; Indigo or Paynes Gray or Neutral tint; and other colors that you enjoy using. Please don't worry if you don't have all of these colors. Substitutions are fine. If you have white gouache or acrylic, bring that also (or use Peg's).
Brushes: a large and small round brush, a 1 inch flat brush, and a rigger/script/liner brush. A scrubber is also very handy (it removes mistakes).
A pencil, eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
Paper towels or rags
A large water container: Like a large yogurt tub or mayo jar.
Professional Grade (Arches 140 lb cold press) watercolor paper . You will need at least 10 pieces in whatever size you like to paint on. I recommend working no larger than 9X12 in class. You can use sheets, a tablet, or a block. Also bring scraps or the blank side of old paintings, to practice on. Please don't bring Strathmore or Cotman paper; it will not work for the techniques we will be learning.
A board to place your paper on. It can be foam core, wood, etc. It should be slightly larger than your paper.
A roll of masking, artist, or blue painters tape
A ruler, or mats that fit your paper sizes
A piece of Grafix acetate, a little bigger than the size of paper you like (or buy a piece from me, 9X12 is $3 and 11X14 is $5. Bring cash on the first day of class. ) It is sold by Cheap Joes Art Stuff.
Reference Materials: sketches and/or photos of landscapes or anything else that inspires you. Remember, look for simple shapes, and light to dark values.
