Small Splashy Paintings in Watercolor

New Workshop, Sponsored by Shenandoah Valley Art Center!

with Peg Sheridan
www.pegsheridan.com/  (540)679-9396

Date:  Wednesday, February 3, 2021
Time: 10 to 3:30, with 45 minute lunch break (pack a lunch).
Location:
Shenandoah Valley Art Center, 126 South Wayne Avenue, Waynesboro
Level: Beginner to advanced. Participants should have basic experience in watercolor painting.
Cost: $100, due by January 28.  Make check payable to Peg Sheridan. ** If you are sending your registration later than January 24, please email me, so I know your check is coming.  Mail is running slowly, and I don't want to cancel the class if I don't need to.
Registration:  Mail check and form below to Peg at: 201 Hunters Lane, Staunton, VA 24401.  Contact me if you need to make other arrangements for payment.  Space will be limited to only 6, so don’t wait.

You can paint loose, splashy, fun watercolors. These paintings exude energy, with drips and dots of color, soft eyes, and a slightly unfinished look.  Peg will lead you through some simple practice exercises to understand the technique.  Then, she will demonstrate a painting, step by step.  She will also share a full color worksheet with you.  You will choose your own subject matter, and Peg will offer individual help.  Most students will complete two or three small paintings in this class.

We will be following CDC guidelines for the pandemic.  Double masks will be required.   Class size is limited to six, to allow spacing.  Please bring your own hand sanitizer.

Peg Sheridan has been painting in watercolor for about 40 years, and teaching for about 20 years.  She is known for her encouraging, positive teaching style.  She has received several regional, and one national award for her watercolors.  She paints outdoors regularly.  She is on the faculty of Beverley Street Studio School, and teaches workshops for many art organizations in Virginia.  See her website for more information.
Contact Peg if you have questions, (540)679-9396.

Materials List (call me if you have questions):
  • A medium to large sized palette (or a butcher tray or white plate, etc).
  • Watercolor Paints: I suggest you bring the following: Ultramarine blue; any green; burnt sienna or Quinacridone Burnt Orange or Rust; alizarin crimson or any rose color; any yellow; and Paynes Gray, Indigo, or neutral tint.  If you have white gouache or acrylic, bring that also.  Do not buy Michael’s Artist Loft brand watercolors; they are poor quality.  I use DaVinci, M. Graham, Winsor and Newton, and Daniel Smith brands.
  • Brushes: a small and a large round brush (preferably synthetic), a 1 inch flat brush, and a rigger/script/liner brush.
  • A pencil, eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchboook).
  • Paper towels or rags
  • A large water container (a peanut butter or mayo jar, for example)
  • Professional watercolor paper: I recommend Arches or 140 or 300 lb. cold press paper.  Do not bring Strathmore or Cotman paper.  Cut or tear about 4 pieces to about 5X7, 5X5, or 6X6 shapes. You could also bring a small block of watercolor paper.  We will work on small squares and rectangles in this class.  Also bring scrap watercolor paper (the backs of old paintings, etc.)
  • A board to place your paper on.  It could be a piece of foam core, wood, etc.  It should be slightly larger than your paper.
  • Miscellaneous: During the pandemic, I recommend bringing hand sanitizer or wipes.  A mask is required.
  • Optional: White gouache or acrylic, or a white gel pen, for adding highlights. Masking fluid, a scrubber brush, and salt.  Also, if you have a black or sepia Micron or similar waterproof pen, bring it.  If you lack any of these, you are welcome to borrow mine.
