Some watercolor paintings immediately draw us in - through striking color,k simple shapes, expressive brushwork, thoughtful line, or strong composition. These are often the paintings that win awards and sell. Wouldn't it be exciting to learn how to creat watercolor paintings with mood and impact?
In the six weeks of this class, we will study how other artists have achieved success in creating mood in a painting. We will look at elements such as color, edge quality, composition, and value range. We'll see how brush strokes can convey mood, also. Each week, we will practice one or two of these elements in our watercolor paintings. We will use our own references, and our memeories, to turn a humdrum scene into one with emotion and life. We'll learn how to create paintings that exude different moods, such as peace, joy, excitement, contemplation, mystery or any mood you'd like to explore. In the menatime, we will practice several watercolor techniques.
Instruction concsist of guided demonstrations, color worksheets, and individual support. Students will have the opportunity to select their own subject matter, with an emphasis on experimentation throughout the course.
If you're ready to stop copying photos and start learning how to paint with emotion and impact, this may be the perfect class for you!
Materials List (call me if you have questions):
- A medium to large sized palette (or a butcher tray or white plate, etc).
- Watercolor paints: Student or professional grade watercolor paints. I suggest the following: prussian or thalo or antwerp blue; ultramarine or cobalt blue, any green; burnt sienna or similar brown; rose madder or Quinacridone rose or any rose color; ganboge or hansa yellow or any yellow; and either Paynes Gray or Indigo. Bring any other colors you like. I am not choosy about paints but don't buy Michael's brand (Artists Loft). Those paints have a lot of filler in them and are too opaque. Titanium white gouache or acrylic is also helpful. Contact Peg for more information.
- A large (quart or so) water container. A large yogurt or mayonnaise container works well.
- Brushes: a variety of small to large round watercolor brushes (sizes 2 to 10 or 12), a 1 inch flat, a large (1.5 to 2 inch) wash brush, a rigger and a scrubber (it removes mistakes). Bring any other of your favorite brushes.
- A pencil, eraser, and something to take notes on (or a sketchbook)
- Paper towels or rags
- Watercolor paper. I recommend professional watercolor paper, especially Arches cold press 140 lb. watercolor paper. You can work on any size you like, up to about 12X16 (due to space). You can also use a tablet or a block. Please do not bring Cotman or Strathmore paper; it will not work for the techniques we will be learning. Also bring scrap paper, too (the backs of old paintings or cheaper paper). You will need about 12 pieces of paper, in whatever size you like, for the 6 week class.
- A board to place your paper on. It could be a piece of foam core, wood, etc. It should be slightly larger than your paper. Also bring a small piece of wood or something to prop up the top of your board about an inch (like a roll of masking or painter's tape).
- Optional: masking fluid. Dur-a-Lar watermedia acetate to cover your paintings and experiment (or buy a 11X14 sheet from me for $5. Bring cash to the first class.
- Photos and/or sketches that inspire you.
